Why Maida Vale

Experience the Maida Vale difference.
We call our own shots — so you can too

Maida Vale is the vision of Patricia and Edward Wynd. The local Taranaki couple — and now their children Karla, and Tony — have devoted their careers and lives to caring for older New Zealanders and raising the bar when it comes to living well through retirement.

Being independently owned and operated allows us to call our own shots. With Pat at the helm, that means staying true to our Best Care Promise, saying “yes” more often and tilting the balance from profits to people.

True flexibility

Our residents are all unique — and we love that. Without corporate red tape, we’ve got more flexibility and can try to honour individual preferences like welcoming a family pet.

When it comes to village life, residents call the shots and we make it happen. Want to plant a vege garden? Host a birthday with the grandies? Or organise a special village outing? We’re here to help you make it happen.

We’re here to help you make it happen.

Our 58 independent villas (with 12 more on the way) come in a variety of styles and configurations. We could fit more units on the site — but as rural folk, we appreciate space, and know our residents feel the same and love their amazing views.

The best team and care

It really does take a village — and at Maida Vale, yours is made up of experienced staff who love what they do. Maida Vale is staffed above the minimum requirements to ensure you receive the attention, time and care you deserve.

We’re also contracted to deliver home-based support services directly. Instead of waiting on another external provider, a friendly face from our Maida Vale team takes care of those needs as part of your ongoing care.

We have 40 years of experience navigating New Zealand’s aged-care systems. We partner with primary aged-care specialists Third Age Health. Their GPs and Nurse Practitioners bring advanced clinical expertise and work as part of our team — collaborating seamlessly with our registered nurses and care staff.

A passion for compassion and legacy of care

We’re in this for the right reasons — led from the front by Patricia and Edward and their children Karla and Tony. From her very first job in aged care at 21, Pat felt a deep connection with the people she supported.

Her reputation for quality care grew so strong that health officials encouraged her and Ed — an experienced tradesman — to open their own aged care facility in New Plymouth. They built, opened and ran Riverview Rest Home, then were invited to develop a similar facility in Thames.

Meanwhile, the old Bell Block Tavern (now part of Mountain View) had been converted into a rest home by Peter and Maida Innes-Smith and then sold to Sharon and David Steele. Pat and Ed were living just down the road, commuting back and forth to Thames in 1999 when the facility came on the market. It was the opportunity the family had been waiting for and the rest is now Maida Vale history.

With support from their children the Wynd’s took the reins and began transforming the site into what Maida Vale is today: a vibrant, resident-focused retirement village shaped by decades of hands-on experience and heartfelt care.
