5 Steps for Getting Residential Care Sorted
We know moving into residential care is a major life event for you and your whānau, and that navigating the process can be complicated and sometimes confusing. Maida Vale wants to make moving here as easy as possible. This guide takes you through the different steps involved and connects you with the people who can help you along the way.
1. Arrange a Needs Assessment
A Needs Assessment is a mandatory first step for anyone entering long term care, moving to a higher level of care, or applying or reapplying for a Residential Care Subsidy. The assessment is free. It helps us all understand the level of care, support services and living arrangements that will suit you best.
In Taranaki all Needs Assessments are arranged through Taranaki Community Support Services. Contact them by calling 06 759 7214 or emailing olderpeoplesnasc@tdhb.org.nz.
Learn more about Needs Assessments, how they’re done and why they’re required here.
2. Understanding the Costs
Residential aged care charges are set by Health NZ — not individual providers. There is a weekly ‘maximum contribution’ care providers can charge for residential care. It includes GST but excludes some extras you may opt for i.e. a surcharge for a premium room
(read more about what’s included and excluded here).
If your Needs Assessment reveals you require hospital-level care, there are added costs. These are covered by Health New Zealand via a ‘top-up’ subsidy. This is paid directly to the care provider and is available to everyone requiring the higher level of care, regardless of whether they’re paying for their residential care privately or receive a government subsidy.
3. Visit Maida Vale and Explore your Options
No matter what level of care you require, Maida Vale can support you to live well. We are certified by the Ministry of Health and contracted by Health NZ to provide a full range of aged care services — including independent living support, rest home care, and hospital-level care.
We offer a range of different accommodation options including residential villas, serviced apartments and rooms in our comfortable care home. Maida Vale has several premium rooms that offer additional features like an ensuite, kitchenette or more space (and incur an additional weekly charge above the maximum contribution).
Based on the results of your Needs Assessment, our team can support you to decide which accommodation option is right for you.

4. Apply for a Residential Care Subsidy
In New Zealand people need to pay for their own aged care services. However, many New Zealanders qualify for a Residential Care Subsidy to help cover the costs.
Your eligibility and entitlement are based on a range of factors including your age, assets, income and needs. Your needs assessor will give you a Financial Means Assessment form to fill out and return to Work and Income. After reviewing your paperwork, Work and Income will let you (and Health NZ) know what you’re entitled to and pay any subsidy directly to your residential care provider.
Generally, a subsidy will cover the maximum contribution we talked about in Step 2. Receiving a Residential Care Subsidy affects your superannuation as the Government must offset some of the cost of your care.
If you don’t qualify for a subsidy, you can apply for a Residential Care Loan here.
You can read more about eligibility and the process around Residential Care Subsidies on Work and Income’s site here.
5. Read and Complete the Paperwork
Once we understand your needs, finances and personal preferences, we will create an Admission Agreement which sets out:
- Your chosen accommodation option.
- The charges and costs you will incur (including which ones are eligible for a government subsidy and which you will need to self-fund).
- Your rights and responsibilities.
- Our staffing, health and safety and security arrangements.
- Our terms and conditions including things like how much notice you have to give if you want to transfer or leave.
